When using your Gmail within Shift, you can think of the functionality of Shift as simply pulling your Gmail view into a different environment. Besides adding easily accessible buttons for your calendar and Drive services, Shift does not have any impact on the Gmail interface itself. Any changes to your Gmail settings (inbox layout, theme, add-ons, signature, vacation responder, etc...) need to be made within Gmail itself.
