You may prefer links to open in the background instead of changing focus from your current tab (i.e. opening a new tab without directly switching to it). Opening links in the background in Shift is possible! Here's how:

• Press Ctrl/Cmd-Click on any link 

IMPORTANT: In some cases, Shift will open a link in a separate Shift window regardless of your Open links in Shift preference. However, there's an easy workaround for this, just right-click on the link and select the option "Open link in Default Browser". Read more about this issue here.
