This article outlines troubleshooting steps to follow if you're having issues with persistant or missing desktop notifications.

Step #1. Check your system permissions

Make sure Shift has the appropriate permissions in your system preferences. Without them, Shift won't be able to display desktop notifications. You can check your system permissions by operating system, below:

Step #2. Check your notification settings within Shift

  1. Click into any email account or app in your sidebar
  2. Click on the lock icon that's on the right-hand side of the search bar at the top of Shift
  3. Find Notifications in the drop-down and toggle according to your preference
  4. If Notifications do not appear as an option in the initial drop-down, click on Site Settings, then scroll to find Notifications and toggle according to your preference

Step #3. Check your individual email and app notification settings

Shift will honor your individual email and app notification settings. If you've disabled notifications within your email settings, Shift will honour this preference.

  • How to check your email notification settings (Gmail)
    1. Navigate to your email account within Shift
    2. Click on the gear icon (upper right)
    3. Click into the General tab
    4. Scroll down to the Desktop Notifications section and ensure "New mail notifications on" is toggled on.
    5. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and click "Save Changes"

  • How to check your email notification settings (Outlook/Office365)
    1. Navigate to your email account within Shift
    2. Click on the gear icon (upper right)
    3. Click General > Notifications
    4. Scroll down to Desktop notifications and ensure they're enabled

Quick tips

Adjust your "Focus Mode" (Mac) or "Focus Assist" (Windows) settings. If these are enabled, desktop notifications will be blocked but you may still receive sound notifications. If disabled, you will receive desktop notifications as well as sound notifications.

  • How to adjust "Focus Mode" settings (Mac)
    1. Navigate to your OS top bar
    2. Click the moon symbol
    3. Adjust accordingly

  • How to adjust "Focus Assist" settings (Windows)
    1. Navigate to the bottom right corner of the Windows bar
    2. Click the "Notification Center" button in the lower right corner
    3. Expand your widgets within the Notification Center
    4. Click on "Focus Assist" to adjust accordingly
