What to do if you encounter slowness

Have you noticed Shift sometimes seems more sluggish than usual? We have a few quick tips for things you can try, as well as advice on what information to include if you need to reach out to our support team 🐢👓

1. Check your Auto-Hibernate settings

This built-in Shift feature takes into account your computer's RAM and will automatically hibernate your unused web views. This helps keep Shift's impact on your computer's resources, particularly your RAM, low. So, if you haven't clicked into something for a little while, or you tend to click around a lot, you may notice that it can take a second or two for an account to load up. That's a sure sign the account has been hibernating.


First, check your global setting by going to Options (lower left) > Settings > General > Functionality > scroll to find Auto-Hibernate and ensure it is turned on. After that, check your Auto-Hibernate settings for your apps, Workspaces, and emails:


  • Apps: Go to Options (lower left) > Settings > Apps > Installed Apps (at the top) > disable auto-hibernate for apps you always want to receive badges and desktop notifications for new messages. Alternatively, right-click the app in the sidebar and select "Auto-Hibernate Off"
  • Workspaces: Right-click on the Workspace in the sidebar and select "Auto-Hibernate Off." This is an all or nothing setting for the entire Workspace
  • Emails: Go to Options (lower left) > Settings > Accounts > click to expand beside each account you want to turn off auto-hibernate for

2. Hard refresh Shift intermittently

To help ensure the best experience, we recommend you hard refresh Shift once or twice throughout your day. Press Cmd Shift R or Ctrl Shift R on your keyboard to hard refresh. We also recommend fully closing down Shift when you're done using it for the day. You can press Cmd Q or Ctrl Q to fully close Shift.

4. Check your internet connection

While it may seem obvious, internet connectivity affects the speed at which Shift operates on your device. Conducting a quick internet speed test (via a third-party app or web-based tool) will calculate your ping, download speed, and upload speed. 


5. Helpful information to include if you get in touch with support

If you've tried the 4 steps above and are still experiencing slowness, please try to include answers to the following questions to our support team. Having more context around how bad the slowness is and when it started happening will provide our team with the information it needs to recommend other troubleshooting steps as well as to pass on to our quality and development teams so they can investigate the issue further:


  1. When do you see performance issues? (i.e. on startup, when active in Shift, when passively using Shift)
  2. Is the slowness consistent or does it ever subside when you use Shift (e.g. is Shift slow only when you start it up and then gets faster or does it always seem slow)?
  3. Have there been any recent updates in Shift or on your computer?
  4. Do you run other desktop applications alongside Shift? If so, please share the ones you use most often while Shift is running
