Performance issues in Shift

Performance issues and overall slowness can happen in Shift for a few reasons.

We have narrowed down the causes of these performance issues and have listed solutions to ensure that Shift operates as efficiently as you do!  🤓

RAM Usage

Shift runs optimally when you use the correct number of accounts based on the amount of RAM your computer has. In order to use Shift, we recommend having 8 GB or more of RAM on your computer.

To find out the maximum number of accounts you should be using to optimize your operating system and overall performance in Shift please click here.

Hibernation Mode

We've added an Auto-Hibernate feature to Shift that keeps the RAM usage of Shift low. Hibernation Mode automatically snoozes your unused accounts to recover lost processing power from running multiple tabs at once.

Your snoozed tabs are still accessible and may take a few seconds to load as they come out of their Hibernation state.

Please go to Settings > General > Functionality > Auto Hibernate and toggle it on to turn on this feature.

You can right-click on any account or app and choose 'Auto-Hibernate On' to turn on this feature on an account/app basis.

Extensions

Some extensions may cause Shift to slow down. We are working hard on our native extension support in an effort to stabilize our extensions. If you are experiencing a slow down in Shift while using an extension please reach out to our Customer Success Team. We are happy to help in any way we can!

Swap Memory for Mac Users

If you are a Mac user, please make sure you exit out of Shift at the end of each day to ensure that your Mac's swap memory does not grow indefinitely. Mac products do not have a limit on the amount of swap memory used.

If Shift is left running, the amount of swap memory your machine is using can grow indefinitely. This can be easily avoided by quitting/closing Shift at the end of each day. Additionally, you will notice an improvement in the performance of Shift throughout your workday.

Other Tips and Tricks to Improve Performance

  • Hibernate any accounts that you do not use frequently.
  • Try to limit the number of sizeable programs that you are running alongside Shift, such as desktop applications.
  • Exit out of Shift at the end of each day.

If you are experiencing performance issues, please reach out to our Customer Success team here with a video of your task manager or activity monitor. We can provide some guidance on how to optimize Shift.
