Email and calendar notification management

When we talk about "notifications" for email accounts you've added in Shift, we are really referring to 3 main things:

  1. Badges (red numbers you see in the corners of your emails, as well as on the Shift icon in your taskbar or dock)
  2. Desktop notifications (the card pop-ups that appear on your screen)
  3. Notification sounds (the sounds that accompany desktop notifications)

Below are tips for how to manage notifications for each of your added emails.

How to manage badges

Manage your unread badges that sit over your emails in your sidebar by heading into your settings:

  1. Go to Options (lower left corner) > Settings > Accounts > click the expand button on the left-hand side of each email account
  2. Go to Show unread emails badge and toggle it ON or OFF

For emails, you can also control whether or not you'd like the number of your unread messages to contribute to the app total for the Shift icon that sits in your taskbar or dock by toggling the Display total app unread count setting ON or OFF in the same page:

The badge displayed in your Shift taskbar or dock icon is the total of the unread badges you have across your added emails and apps.

How to manage desktop notifications globally

To manage the desktop pop-ups that appear for all accounts in Shift, use the global setting:

  1. Go to Options (lower left corner) > Settings > General > Functionality > scroll to find Show notifications (towards the bottom)
  2. Toggle this ON or OFF. This global setting will take priority over your individual settings, meaning:
    1. If you toggle this OFF, you will not receive desktop notifications at all for any accounts
    2. If you toggle this ON, you can still turn off desktop notifications for individual accounts (see below)

How to manage desktop notifications on an individual email account level

  1. Go to Options (lower left corner) > Settings > Accounts > click the expand button on the left-hand side of each email account
  2. Go to Get email notifications and Show calendar notifications and toggle them ON or OFF

If you have calendar notifications turned on, you will get desktop notifications for any reminders set.
